My heart break in the Philippines

When I arrived in Manilla I was pretty devastated after leaving a guy I got close to in Laos. I felt really alone for the first time on this trip after being on such a high. It was the first time I really stopped and had the time to myself to reflect.

I got a taxi from the airport to the apartment and was totally shocked about the poverty I saw as we drove passed the slums. There were children with dummies sleeping on cardboard with their grandmother while the mother was out working on the street corner. Young boys in gangs, begging for money being exploited by adults, dirty streets, stray dogs, unaccompanied children walking around without shoes. I felt heart broken, I wished there was something I could do to help. All I wanted to do was leave.

That night I overslept in the apartment on the day I was meant to be leaving. I had to pay for an extra day before flying off to the islands. That evening I was in contact with friends at home who were really reassuring and comforting. I got a Tricycle to hotel nearby that did food as I hadn't eaten in almost 24 hours. It was dark and I got lost trying to find my way as there was a roadblock and a bridge I had to cross by foot to get there. I didn't feel safe and I was extremely vulnerable walking around the slums on my own, which wasn't planned and I don't suggest it! There were guards with guns on the streets to keep people safe and they pointed me in the right direction.

When I got to the hotel it seemed nice, it was all lit up and had a pool with a family in it. It was very quiet and I sat there, smoked drunk wine and had the saddest sandwich I'd ever eaten. It was late and the older ladies that owned the place were closing up between cigarettes. I couldn't find a tricycle to get back on so had to walk back. I found a kitten in the middle of the road and picked it up. I gave it to a local boy who seemed sweet to take care of it. Bet his mum was well chuffed with me. The only form of late night entertainment appeared to be the local midget wrestling.

Tomorrow I will head to Boracay where things will be better, surrounded by other backpackers and things to keep myself busy.
